WordPress asked us:
“If you could permanently ban a word from general usage, which one would it be? Why?”

As a writer, words are precious to me.

Ban one?

I thought of the “bad words” in an instant, the curse words, the ones that seem to only exist to crush, hurt, or destroy.

But wait. In this era of human life, we need all the words. Even if only for comparison to the good.

Banning a word entirely, permanently, would feel like a sin. Wouldn’t the thought behind the word just beg more for expression?

Wouldn’t the expression burst into action all too readily?

Nay, I would not ban a word.

I choose instead to focus on the power of the thoughts behind and the actions proceeding from our words.

Even if we think we’ve got a thought under control, still, our actions tell.

Did an action speak louder than a word to you?

Did it speak evil, or good?

Did it speak of love?

Of good character?

Of well-considered decisions?

Let’s talk about them.

I don’t know of a word that I would ban from the world. However, there are some that I ban from my own use. Some that speak poorly of myself. Some that are curses against others. Some that are ugly to my heart. Some that are vile and I do my best to keep them from my lips and my ears.

  2. As a writer, there have been times I have found it difficult to find enough words to help describe certain things like the physical effects from emotions. I vote for more words rather than banning any of them!
