I want to know! I want to know how you knew about them, too.

Chances are many of you learned about these inspirational, influential women from a book.

That’s one reason I love to read history and historical fiction. I want to know.

I want to be inspired to leave the world better than I found it.

I’m not famous. Are you? We don’t need fame to make the world better. Those amazing women from years past weren’t always famous either. Think of the countless number of women throughout history who lived heroically and died without a trace. Were they any less important? Any less to be celebrated?

I think not. I advocate celebrating these unsung heroes. Women who’ve summoned courage to free themselves and their children from domestic violence. Women who’ve dared to face their own flaws and faulty belief systems to pave the way for future generations to be free from vicious cycles of shame and victimization. Women who’ve equipped themselves to battle injustice and change our legal systems to aide victims, to prevent abuse, and to prosecute abusers. Women who’ve laid aside their personal pleasures and goals to tend to little ones who cannot meet their own needs. Women who’ve chosen studies and dedicated research over flight and fancy, to discover or improve some life-changing medicine, procedure or cure for illness, disease or dysfunction. Women who’ve loved their husbands well, who may not have done anything they thought to be very significant, but were content to be the wind beneath their loved one’s wings.

The Bent Tree Path is a tale of such unknown heroes. After Eliza’s and Caroline’s parents were taken during the Cherokee Removal, they grew up hidden in the mountains and later hid among whites, raising families of their own—many of whom later achieved great strides for native rights and recognition. Lena devoted herself to securing safety and freedom from domestic violence for her children in the 1920’s and 30’s, and became a force that changed the law and the foster care system. Becca faced long-buried memories of her childhood molestations and replaced undeserved shame beliefs with powerful love. In book two, Joy will fight corruption and improve the justice system for victims of sexual abuse.

The Bent Tree Path series is my little contribution to the world of women’s history. It’s my way of telling the stories that celebrate our unsung heroes. I hope their stories resonate across the world, lifting women’s present and future.
